The Old Frontier

© Matthew Word Bain

I used to visit this store before it was annexed
by Worthington, with its facade on the main drag
Worthington’s window display is lovely, I concede
but the aesthetic of Frontiers Antiques was something
altogether different
entrance from the side street, through a gravel courtyard
into a poorly lit space, somewhere between an attic and a garage
filled with everything from furniture to records to an honest to goodness
jukebox to play them on —
you never knew what you were going to find in there
there is a certain aesthetic to a certain variety of antique stores
and this one was one of those: stochastic fantastic
I don’t remember the phone booth, but then, it probably wasn’t there
the last time I strolled in to trawl for one man’s trash, another man’s treasure
and to visit with the nonchalant old man whose domain this once was
