Soft Focus, Barbed Wire
what is it about soft focus
that makes an image more appealing?
this is just an outdoor warehouse for industrial materials
that don’t need to be and won’t fit easily under a roof
well, there are the mountains, I suppose…
but even the industrial yard appeals to me in this scene
perhaps it is the contrast between the verdancy
of the mountains in the distance
and the gritty middle ground
or maybe
it is in smoothing over
rough edges
that the effect is
generated
there is balance
in this image, of course,
and there is contrast between
the soft focus of the background
and the sharp focus of the foreground…
I suppose what I am really asking is
why are things beautiful?
what makes things beautiful?
is everything beautiful when viewed properly?
are beautiful things beautiful even when no one is looking?
is beauty perhaps — even sometimes — inherent?
what on earth (or anywhere else) is beauty?
